January 2025

In January we had a one sheet competition amongst our members in the first half with a variety of subjects. It was a close-run contest but the winner was Denis Littlewort (pictured left in group photo) with his King George V Key Plates showing the Nyasaland 4-shilling assassination flaw!
In the second half we had a fascinating and enthralling presentation from member Robert Prentice on Captain Robert Scott’s British scientific expedition to Antarctica from 1910 to 1913 (renamed the Tera Nova expedition.) He outlined the various important dates of the expedition from the departure from Cardiff on 1st June 1910 to the Tera Nova‘s final departure for Antarctica from New Zealand on the 18th January 1913. Robert’s presentation contains various letters from prominent members of the expedition including Captain Oates. The display also contain photographs taken by George Pointing the expedition photograph and videographer covering all aspects of the expedition life. The display also includes programme lectures given George pointing plus publications and postcards as a attribute and memory to the “heroes of the Antarctic.” A number of first day covers were displayed celebrating various anniversaries of Captain Scotts arrival at the South Pole on 18th January 1912.
